The School Resource Officer program represents a continuing effort on the part of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department and Coeur d’Alene School District 271 to provide for the safety and well being of students and school personnel on our campuses. The presence of uniformed police officers on school campuses, in addition to basic law enforcement services, allows for an array of police services to be provided to both students and staff, such as the dissemination of information from the police department regarding the criminal justice system, gang intervention and prevention, and alcohol and drug abuse prevention.

While at school, School Resource Officers provide a safe environment conducive for learning. Their presence and instant availability provides immediate interdiction for at risk youth and security for school faculty. Issues and conflicts are resolved in a timely manner alleviating the risk of escalation.

While also assigned cases involving juvenile suspects, School Resource Officers gain a familiarity with the juveniles exhibiting criminal behavior. SRO's issue citations, forward investigative reports to the court system and meet to review cases with Juvenile Diversion members on a regular basis.
